Yugen Pictures is a documentary-first, UK-based production company committed to showcasing weird, wacky, and wonderful people and places in the UK and beyond.
The word Yūgen is an ancient Japanese concept with no direct English translation. It is composed of two characters: yū, meaning dark or hidden from view, and gen, which originally referred to the tranquil colour of the universe. I find the most meaningful English translation of the feeling of Yūgen to be a sort of profound mystery.
The essence of YÅ«gen is not meant to be defined but experienced. The late philosopher Alan Watts beautifully captured this through a series of poetic analogies in which YÅ«gen could be experienced: “a boat disappearing behind distant islands; wild geese seen and then lost in the clouds; the silver moon behind the pines.” ​
From the beginning, our vision for Yugen Pictures has been to create things that inspire others to create something of their own, to travel, and to express themselves—and perhaps, if we’re lucky, to evoke a sense of profound mystery about themselves and the universe.
